Michael Susca, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-SCF

Michael Susca is a person who used to stutter.   After 20 years working with people who stutter, Dr. Susca completed his Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). He then continued working as a therapist, professor, and researcher in the field of stuttering and communication disorders.  Today, Dr. Susca is known as a leading expert in stuttering, cluttering, and other fluency disorders.  He maintains a clinical practice in Santa Cruz, California.

 

Dr. Susca has presented various papers in professional journals and at state, national, and international venues. Currently, he serves clients of all ages in his private practice.   He makes differential diagnoses to determine and develop custom treatment programs. Dr. Susca develops customized therapy programs. These programs provide the most meaningful and functional strategies to improve communicative efficiency and effectiveness.  Individualized treatments specifically meet the needs of the client and those with whom the client communicates.

Dr. Susca is a board-certified specialist in stuttering, cluttering, and fluency disorders.  His primary focus has been serving people with these communicative disorders.  He has also served as a legal expert witness in this specialty.   His secondary focus has been and continues to be serving people with aphasia, especially those who are no longer eligible for insurance coverage but still seek treatment.  Many people with aphasia have communication problems despite their potential for further improvements.   Finally, Dr. Susca continues to treat children with poor or reduced intelligibility due to articulation delays or disorders.  Dr. Susca has served populations of people with diverse communication difficulties throughout his entire professional life.

A Brief Summary

Michael Susca has nearly 50 years of clinical experience as a speech and language pathologist. Preschoolers, children, adolescents, and adults of all ages benefit from his services. He helps people improve the quality of their lives by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of their communication.  Each client receives an in-depth evaluation resulting in a differential diagnosis and customized treatment plan. Family members and significant others are encouraged to be part of the clinical process.

Dr. Susca brings a deep and broad background of education, experiences, and clinical acumen to his practice. He is a clinician’s clinician. As an expert specialist in stuttering, cluttering, and fluency disorders he takes a multifactorial approach to determine the techniques, strategies, and approaches best suited to those with interrupted speech. As a practicing clinician from multiple medical settings, he brings a constellation of tools, processes, and adaptations to those with interrupted language from stroke, tumors, or other neurogenic disturbances. As a SLP, he brings the skills required to enhance the clarity of a child’s speech.
